Many of you already know that Mark is battling throat cancer. For the latest update, please visit www.carepages.com. Unfortunately, you have to sign in, etc. to get to the "getwellmark" (all one word) page. But once you've saved your info, it's just two clicks in to check on him. We'll be putting updates there regularly to let you know the details of his treatment and recovery.

Meanwhile, we are overwhelmed by the love, support, and prayers that have come from around the world. Once mark gets settled in for his first week of chemo, he'll be back with another message (we've been a bit swamped to get this all going). Please keep him in your thoughts for the journey ahead. -MK family

A Message from MK

hey there groovy guys and groovy gals... it's yr ol' pal MK here with some less than stellar news. i will not be joining the boys on this july run thru the good ol' USofA...

my MDs have decided that a lump i've had on my neck for quite some time may in fact be a bigger problem than they originally thought. they can't say it's cancer but they can't say it isn't either (all tests are negative so far but they are still quite concerned).

meanwhile, i have several wonderful healers that believe they can help me a lot with focused attention and hard work... so that's what i'll be doing for the next month. if all goes well... all good. otherwise it's western style surgery and we'll have to wait and see where the dust settles.

so get on out to the shows. they'll be different and i'm sure they'll be fun. if at all possible i plan on joing the boyz for a rockin' good time on the august run.

much love to alla you boneheads!!!

mark karan .............................

Steve Kimock, who shared the lead guitar spot with Mark Karan for The Other Ones' first two tours, will join RatDog for July's shows.

"Our old friend Steve Kimock has graciously offered to cover for him for this tour, and so we're thinking we should go with this," Bob is quoted as saying on RatDog's quasi site. "We'll be in touch with Mark daily, and if his docs cut him loose, we'll bring him out."

Adds MK, "I'll be back ASAP and I'm sure my ol' TOO-mate Senor Kimock will do his best to add something special to this run. Keep me in your prayers, and meantime…'Hey, hey…come right away…come and join the party everyday.'"

The Associated Press
Ithaca — In honor of the 30th anniversary of one of the Grateful Dead's most legendary performances that took place on May 8, 1977 at Cornell University's Barton Hall, Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson will declare May 8, Grateful Dead Day in Ithaca.

The headlining event of this anniversary celebration is Dark Star Orchestra's recreation of the Legendary May 8, 1977 Grateful Dead concert.

Tickets for Dark Star Orchestra are on sale now. They are $24.50 in advance or $26.50 at the door. Go online at www.stateofithaca.com, by phone at 273-4497, or in person at The Ticket Center at Clinton House located at 116 North Cayuga St. in downtown Ithaca or at the Theatre on the day of the show to purchase a ticket.

The Mayors Proclamation is as follows:

Proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Ithaca

Whereas, the Grateful Dead have been recognized by many highly credible organizations, individuals and entities including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as significantly important and integral to the musical and social fabric of our contemporary culture, and whereas, on May 8th, 1977 the Grateful Dead performed in Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University in the city of Ithaca New York, a concert that is widely acknowledged and regarded as a defining and transcendent occasion and example of the art of contemporary musical improvisation, collaboration, musicianship, and performance, and whereas, many tens of thousands of individuals who were not in attendance that night in Barton Hall, have become knowledgeable & familiar with the extraordinary nature of the performance on May 8th 1977 through the trading and sharing of recordings of the show, and whereas, the cultural identity and perceptions of Ithaca as a community, have been informed and bolstered by the widespread acknowledgement of the magic of May 8th, 1977, and whereas, it has been said many times by many people that, "there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert."

Now therefore, be it resolved that as Mayor of the City of Ithaca, and in heartfelt recognition of the thirtieth anniversary of the May 8th 1977 concert performance, I declare May 8th 2007 as Grateful Dead Day in the City of Ithaca.

Jam 4 Life is a two-night run at Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom April 21-22.

press release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 9, 2007
Denver Music Community Comes Together to Jam 4 Life

Two-Day Benefit Concert Will Help Recent Shooting Survivors

DENVER, CO - In response to the recent robbery and triple shooting near the Light Rail Station at 25th Avenue and Welton Street in Denver, the Denver music community is holding a two-day concert, Jam 4 Life, on April 21 and 22 to benefit the shooting victims. The three victims, Ian Dumpert, 23, of Lawrence, KS; Joseph Kuebel, 23, of DuPage, IL; and John Watt, 22 of Wamego, KS, survived, but are facing mounting medical bills.

The weekend event will take place at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom at 2637 Welton Street. in Denver, CO and will feature performances by several local and regional bands as well as nationally known musicians. Harmonious Junk, Home, AAA, Octopus Nebula, DJ Heavyhead, Schmocter, and Lunar Fire will perform on Saturday. Sunday will kick-off with a bluegrass jam with many local Colorado bluegrass musicians, along with performances by LadyFish and The Millbridge Brothers followed by performances by Head for the Hills, The Denver West African Percussion Group, and Michael Travis of String Cheese Incident with his band, Zilla.

A silent auction will offer concert-goers a chance to purchase donated memorabilia from several nationally known bands as well as items from a variety of local Colorado artists, musicians, restaurants, spas, and music stores.

Cost is $ (not determined yet) . All proceeds will go to the Jam 4 Life Benefit Fund and will be used to help the three incredibly lucky survivors get back on their feet.

The three victims were waiting at the Light Rail Station with four other friends early in the morning of March 25 when two armed men wearing ski masks approached them and demanded money. They immediately complied, handing over their wallets, but were shot anyway. Dumpert was shot in the face. Watt was hit twice in the neck. Kuebel was shot in the leg and back

The three were hospitalized in stable condition at Denver Health and Medical Center. Kuebel and Watt have recovered sufficiently from their wounds, but Dumpert sustained more extensive injuries and is facing additional surgeries and treatment.

At the time of the accident, Dumpert had medical insurance through his parents; however, his coverage expired on April 6, his 23rd birthday, due to age restrictions. New policy restrictions on pre-existing conditions will make it difficult, if not impossible, for Dumpert to acquire new insurance coverage to pay for his future treatment. The money will help pay for multiple reconstructive surgeries on his jaw, physical therapy and months of medication, in addition to helping all three make up for lost wages.

Dumpert, Kuebel and Watt were visiting Denver with four additional friends, a few of whom were planning to relocate to Denver. Dumpert still plans to move to Denver and has signed a lease on an apartment and secured employment.

Melissa Smith of Golden, CO and Jay Bianchi, owner of Cervantes, are organizing the event. The genesis of the grass-roots event is true to the organic spirit of live music.

here's my lil story of yesterday when my boyfriend Rick and I went to Phil Lesh's book signing then the Ratdog show:

yesterday Rick and I drove up to Philly to see Phil Lesh at a booksigning for his new book. When we got the the Philly free library, there was hundreds, maybe a thousand, dirty hippies there...all lined up to get their book signed ;) Rick and I went in the back of the line which spiraled thru the whole library, around the building, to outside. It was such a long wait, and then it started raining! ahh so were waiting there for 3 hours, i just started reading the book and skecthing a bit. We mee this nice girl named Lindsey and her mom, we talked for a while. we finally got to Phil (he looks older in person, lol) and we got the book signed ;) he shook my hand twice! ahh it was such an honor ;D his hands were jelly-ish lol, guess from all those years of bass. I asked him if his hands were tired from signing and he said, "haha nope, not yet!". and best of all, Lindsey asked him why he played bass, just any response, and he said, "because it's there". hahaha i love it! and the first 200 people get signed posters, and Lindsey said, "wouldn't it be funny if you were like ..200 or something?" guess what.....I WAS! hahah i got a Phil poster, yeehaw! talk about coincidence! After we got some chinese food

Then....RATDOG! second time this month ;) the lot scene at the electric factory was nuts!! probably because the Dead aren't touring, so many people came to see them. I wonder if Phil came to the show...I was talking to people about how sick it would be if Phil came up on stage and started jammin with Bobby since he was in town! meh, didn't happen. Anyway, there was so many ballons in the lot, more nirtous than i;ve seen in a looong time. suprised me since philly is usually strict about that, but i guess they were afraid of the dirty hippies. as we drove in this guy came up to our window and i guess my legs were showin from under my dress and he's like "nice legs lil mama, wanna buy a shirt?" haha i'm like "no thanks", but rick got all protective and covered my legs lol, he was mad. It was a real headdy lot scene, you hear "coke!" "shrooms" "mollies!" everywhere. Haha it was nuts! so It was DOWNPOURING like a motherhumper and i was soaked in my dress, and the new pants i made Rick got all soaked. I sold some of my dreadbeads and jewelery in the lot and looked at some pieces. I need a new mini bubbler! and a chillum! ahh i'll go to this headshop Artifax near me this weekend after SATS (augh!). So Rick and i smoked in the rain...which was a FEAT. there were huge puddles everywhere and my new sandals got all wet, meh. This dude came up to us when we were smoking and he's like "looks like yout wo arent partying enough, i'm giving you a ticket!" and he was acting all serious and stuff LOL! I got scared for a sec but then i realized he was one of Bobby's people for the liver funraiser so we have a him a few bucks since the dude gave us all these funny stickers. I smelled pretty dank. So i got some balloons, good stuff, then we went inside and found Lindsey from the booksigning. we got up front and Ratdog started playin, it was crazy! all my fav songs and all.....smoked with some people around us ad then lindsey pulled out this phat joint and we all smoked...it was some really stong stuff, reall good ;) i was off the wall at that point but it was amazing. 2nd ser was even better! Rick is 21 now so he got some drinks, good stuff. We found out Lindsey goes to Temple University, where Rick goes ;) its big so not that much of a suprise. it was an awesome show, just like the last. Bobby had tons of energy and was goin crazy! the place was packed so i didnt have much room to dance but thats ok, i could barely stand up lol. they played THREE DYLAN SONGS! wohhoo! and my favorite one too.
